History of Vipiteno
Vipiteno - the well-preserved medieval old town is considered to be the northernmost town in Italy and, for some years now, one of the most beautiful.
Historically, it was an important trading and market place, which is also reflected in today's economic structure. The parish church of „Unsere Liebe Frau im Moos“, a Gothic church from the 15th century, is another architectural highlight. The Heiliggeistspital, founded in the 13th century, now houses a museum and is a testimony to Vipiteno's long history as an important trading center.
The town has a strong artisan tradition, particularly in woodworking and handicrafts. The weekly farmers' market (Fridays from May to October) and various local festivals, such as the famous dumpling festival, attract visitors from the region and beyond.
The heart of the town is the 46-metre-high „Zwölferturm-tower“, which was built around 1472 and dominates the townscape. The tower originally served as a watch and bell tower and separates the new district from the old town. A stroll through the old town takes you to picturesque arcades, historic buildings and charming cafés.
Surroundings and leisure activities
The surrounding valleys of Ridnaun, Ratschings, Jaufental, Pfitsch and Pflersch offer a wide range of leisure activities. Numerous mountains are lined up here and are ideal for hiking and mountaineering. In winter, the slopes of the local mountain and ski area Rosskopf are particularly suitable for all levels of difficulty. Here you can experience a breathtaking view of the Wipptal.
If you still haven't had enough skiing fun, you can ski further kilometers of slopes in the nearby ski areas of Ratschings-Jaufen and Ladurns.
Culinary specialties
Sterzing is not only famous for its traditional dumpling dishes, which are offered in many variations. In addition, numerous alpine huts and inns offer regional specialties such as bacon, cheese and homemade pasta. The close connection to Alpine culture is reflected in the local recipes, which are often passed down from generation to generation.
Conclusion
Sterzing is a town that combines its historic past with a lively present. It offers a unique blend of cultural experiences, nature-based activities and culinary delights. Whether on a stroll through the picturesque old town or on a hike in the surrounding mountains - Vipiteno and its surroundings are an ideal destination for anyone who wants to experience authentic South Tyrol.
